The bankruptcy proceedings involving professional golf organisation LIV Golf have provided fresh evidence of escalating legal costs at leading American law firms, with disclosed hourly rates exceeding $3,000 for senior partners. A creditors' committee has selected Willkie Farr & Gallagher to provide legal representation during the restructuring, according to reporting published on 27 October.

Willkie will work alongside Fox Rothschild after being chosen from four firms considered by the committee. Its proposed hourly rates range from $2,350 to $3,100 for partners and senior counsel, while associates and other lawyers will charge between $995 and $2,075. LIV Golf itself is represented by Gibson Dunn, whose disclosed partner rates reach $3,240 per hour. The firm billed the organisation more than $1.6 million for work performed in September.

LIV entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey in September, following a decision by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund to end financial support after the 2026 season. The fund had invested more than $5 billion in the organisation since its launch in 2022. LIV intends to continue operating while restructuring its finances, with creditors seeking to protect their interests through the proceedings.

The case illustrates the considerable costs associated with complex corporate insolvencies and the premium commanded by specialised legal advisers. Hourly rates above $3,000 have become increasingly visible among prominent US firms, particularly in restructuring and high-value litigation. For companies facing financial distress, such fees can represent a significant additional burden even when specialist legal expertise is essential to negotiating a viable recovery.
